Find Your Feet

Your mind spends most of the day somewhere other than where your body is. It is in the meeting from this morning, the conversation you are dreading, the thing you forgot to buy. Your feet, meanwhile, are right here. They are very reliable that way.

When your thoughts start to race today, stop and find your feet. Feel them press into the floor. Notice your heels, then the balls of your feet, then each toe if you can. Notice your socks, your shoes, the temperature. Shift your weight a little from side to side and feel what changes. Stay there for five slow breaths.

This works standing in a kitchen, sitting in a meeting, or waiting in a checkout line, and nobody can tell you are doing it. You are not trying to stop the thoughts. You are giving your attention somewhere solid to stand while they pass.
