Hands washing dishes mindfully in a sunlit kitchen — DBT One-Mindfully skill

The Pause Between Breaths

You’ve been breathing wrong your whole life. Not the inhale, not the exhale — the part in between, the tiny gap where nothing happens. You skip right over it, racing to the next breath like it’s a to-do list item.

Try this instead: breathe in. Breathe out. Then wait. Just for a second, sit in that gap before the next inhale pulls you forward. Don’t rush to fill it.

It’ll feel unnatural at first, like a sentence that trails off. That’s fine. That gap is the closest thing your nervous system has to an off-switch, and meditation teachers have built entire traditions around making people sit in it on purpose.

Do this for ten breaths. You’re not trying to relax — relaxing is a side effect. You’re just noticing the space that was there the whole time, underneath all that inhaling and exhaling you’ve been so busy doing.
