Hands washing dishes mindfully in a sunlit kitchen — DBT One-Mindfully skill

Wash Your Hands Like You Mean It

You wash your hands roughly four hundred times a year and remember almost none of them. It’s a task your body does on autopilot while your brain is somewhere else entirely — rehearsing an email, replaying an argument, anywhere but the sink.

Next time, stay. Feel the temperature of the water change. Notice the soap’s smell, the lather between your fingers, the exact second it stops feeling slippery. Twenty seconds is the recommended minimum for hygiene; it’s also just barely long enough to actually be somewhere.

This is one of the only moments in modern life that comes with a built-in timer and zero decisions to make. No notifications, no choices, just water and soap and you. Use it.
