In your next conversation, try something uncomfortable: actually listen. Not the polite, nodding-along kind of listening where half your brain is already drafting your response. The kind where you let the other person finish a thought before you start building yours.
It’s harder than it sounds. Your brain hates the silence of not-yet-replying and will try to fill it immediately. Let it sit there anyway. You can pause for a full second after they stop talking before you say anything at all.
Most people go their whole lives rarely experiencing being fully heard. You can’t control whether anyone does that for you, but for one conversation today, you can do it for someone else — and notice what changes when you’re not performing the next thing you’re going to say.
